Quick reference
Left and right sensors are mirror images; swapping sides causes inverted signal output and headlight aim errors
2014 LCI facelift introduced revised connector seals; pre- and post-LCI sensors are electrically identical but weatherproofing differs
Vehicles with option 2VF (self-leveling rear suspension) use additional height sensors on rear axle that differ from headlight-leveling-only variants
Context
When scavenging BMW F10 5 Series chassis (2010-2017) for ride height sensors, target the Hella-manufactured units bearing BMW part numbers 37146763735 (front left) and 37146763736 (front right). These sensors mount to the front control arms via fragile plastic linkages—inspect closely for cracked ball sockets or bent actuator rods before purchasing. The same physical units interchange across the 528i, 535i, and 550i sedan range, including F11 Touring wagons and F07 GT models with standard suspension. Rear axle monitoring uses 37146763737 and 37146763738. During installation, never rotate the sensor arm independently; the internal resistive film strips easily. Torque the small M6 bracket fasteners to only 6 Nm and verify the wiring harness retains its rubber grommet—water ingress at the 3-pin connector causes the majority of Auto Levelling Device failures. Post-installation requires headlight vertical aim calibration via BMW ISTA-D to clear shadow memory errors like 009CBC. Compatible supplier casting numbers include Hella 6NW010542-xx and Continental A2C59511607, which often survive longer than faded OEM labels in junkyard environments.
