5.7L V8 Naturally Aspirated LS1 (350hp).
Quick reference
Verify vehicle RPO codes: F55 (Magnetic Ride) and Z06 springs are incompatible with base model replacements
Part numbers 22111591 and 88984226 require verification against current GM supersession chains due to potential mid-cycle service updates
Springs often lack stamped part numbers; rely on color codes, free length measurement (approx. 11.5 inches), and wire diameter for positive identification
Context
The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette C5 utilizes a rear coil spring design distinct from its transverse front leaf spring setup. For the right rear position, GM part number 22111591 (superseded by 88984226 in some service catalogs) is the correct replacement for base coupe and convertible models manufactured 1997-2004. These springs are strictly side-specific and feature identifying color bands—never install the left spring (22111590) on the right side. When junkyard harvesting, physically measure free length and compare paint codes; avoid springs from 2001-2004 Z06 models (GM 10422006) as their higher rates will ruin ride comfort and handling balance. Similarly, reject F55 Magnetic Ride components which use unique wire diameters and rates. Pre-installation inspection requires checking for coil binding, corrosion at the lower A-arm seat, and deteriorated rubber upper isolators. Always use a heavy-duty wall-mounted spring compressor with safety chains, as the C5's rear suspension maintains significant preload even at full droop, making the spring dangerous if improperly released.
