This rubber-metal composite joint, often called a 'rag joint,' deteriorates over 30+ years causing excessive play and clunking over bumps. When junkyard hunting, target any 1990-1996 Z32 chassis regardless of VG30DE or VG30DETT engine code, as Nissan used the same steering shaft assembly across all trim levels. Inspect the rubber donut for dry rot, separation from metal sleeves, and torn bonding. During installation, scribe alignment marks on the splines before removal—the joint must be phased correctly to prevent binding. Torque the pinch bolt to 25-30 N·m. If sourcing used, prioritize 1994-1996 models as the rubber compound improved slightly, though all vintage units should be checked for rotational slop. Note that while 48080-30P00 appears on early 1990 production, the flange bolt pattern differs slightly and requires verification before installation.
