Quick reference
F07 5-Series GT utilizes a different steering column geometry; do not interchange with F10/F11 despite similar part appearance
2014 LCI facelift introduced minor SZL connector updates; verify pin compatibility when transferring switch clusters
Casting numbers are supplier-specific (ThyssenKrupp/ZF) and vary by production date; verify physical mounting tab alignment before purchase
Context
When sourcing a BMW F10 5-Series steering column from the junkyard, first confirm whether your 2011 528i has manual adjustment (OEM 32-30-6-792-419) or the electric option (32-30-6-792-423), as wiring and mounting brackets differ. Interchange covers 2010-2016 F10 sedans and F11 wagons across N52, N55, and diesel variants, but strictly match left-hand drive to left-hand drive due to asymmetrical mounting. Inspect the lower universal joint for notchiness and the tilt mechanism for broken detents—a common failure causing wheel wobble or rattling over bumps. During extraction, lock the steering wheel center and disconnect the battery before removing the airbag and SZL switch cluster to prevent clockspring damage. Post-installation requires steering angle sensor calibration via ISTA-D to clear DSC faults.
