Quick reference
1990 model year did not have factory HID; verify if retrofitting or if vehicle is actually 1994-1996
Left and right ballasts are not interchangeable due to asymmetric mounting bracket geometry
JDM market Fairlady Z may use different part numbers (28474-40Pxx series) with similar electrical function
Context
The left HID ballast for the Nissan 300ZX Z32 platform serves as the high-voltage control unit for the xenon arc discharge headlamp system. Factory-installed only on 1994-1996 TT and NA models, genuine units bear Nissan part number 28474-30P01 for the left/driver side, distinct from the right-side 28474-30P00. These aluminum-cased modules mount beneath the headlight buckets and are notorious for heat-related failures after 25+ years. When harvesting from 1994-1996 donors at junkyards, inspect the seven-pin connector for heat damage—a common Z32 malady—and verify the Matsushita or Koito supplier casting numbers on the housing base. Installation requires bumper removal to access the mounting bracket; never touch the igniter terminals with bare hands due to high-voltage retention. Test for steady arc color; flickering or pinkish hues indicate capacitor degradation inside 28474-30P01. Note that 1990-1993 models utilized halogen lamps exclusively, so this ballast only fits earlier chassis if retrofitting the entire front lighting harness and bezels.
