5.7L V8 Naturally Aspirated LS1 (350hp).
Quick reference
Z06 models (2001-2004) utilize distinct muffler assemblies with larger diameter tips and different part numbers; verify by checking for '405 HP' door badging before removal
1997 early production units may have prototype hanger bracket spacing; verify bolt pattern against 1998-2004 specifications
Part numbers 10241517/10241518 supersede earlier service catalog listings; verify Tenneco or ArvinMeritor supplier markings on case
Context
When scavenging Chevrolet Corvette C5 axle-back sections from donor vehicles, target 1997-2004 base model coupes and convertibles equipped with the 5.7L LS1. The correct service replacements carry GM part numbers 10241517 (driver side) and 10241518 (passenger side), which interchange across all base model years regardless of transmission type. Inspect the three-point mounting system for corrosion at the forward steel hanger bracket where it welds to the stainless muffler body—a common failure point in northern climates. Shake the canister vigorously to detect internal baffle rattle; C5 mufflers suffer packing degradation after 80,000 miles that creates a metallic marbles sound under load. During installation, support the intermediate X-pipe before loosening the 15mm clamp bolts to prevent stress on the rear cradle isolators. Torque the band clamps to 35 lb-ft and ensure 1/4-inch tip clearance from the fascia to prevent heat damage. Avoid Z06 donors (2001-2004) which utilize incompatible titanium-tip mufflers with different valance alignment.
