Thermostat Housing - 2002 Corvette C5 LS1

The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette utilizes a glass-filled nylon thermostat housing (GM 12571261 or updated 12608860) that bolts directly to the front timing cover. This component is interchangeable across all 1997-2004 C5 Corvettes regardless of LS1 or LS6 engine designation, and mechanically fits 1998-2002 F-body Camaro/Firebird LS1 applications with identical outlet angles. When sourcing from junkyards, inspect the plastic mounting ears for stress cracks—a common failure point where the 11 ft-lb torque specification was exceeded during previous service. The housing uses an O-ring seal (GM 12572992) rather than a gasket; always replace this orange O-ring and lubricate with coolant before installation to prevent weep leaks. Check the bleed vent for debris blockages, as trapped air pockets cause overheating in these engines. Note that while 1999-2006 truck LSx engines (Silverado, Sierra) use visually similar housings, their outlet points straight upward and will not clear the Corvette's frame rail hose routing without modification.
