The trunk release switch on the Z32-generation Nissan 300ZX (1989-1996) commonly fails due to cracked plastic tabs or corroded internal contacts. When sourcing from salvage yards, prioritize 1990-1996 models using Nissan part number 25312-40P01, which superseded the early 25312-40P00 design. The switch mounts to the driver-side kick panel via two Phillips screws and connects via a 2-pin weatherpack connector—early 1989 models may lack the integrated illumination circuit found on later cars. Test for tactile button response and check the white plastic actuator for cracks before purchase. Installation requires removing the lower dash trim; the switch actuates a cable-driven latch mechanism, so verify the cable eyelet hasn't stretched. All Z32 variants including VG30DETT twin-turbos and naturally aspirated VG30DE models use the same switch, though 2+2 models route the cable differently.
