Quick reference
Distinguish carefully between the mechanical lock cylinder (key tumbler) and the electrical ignition switch—sellers often confuse these
USDM 1990-1996 vs JDM 1989-2000 may have different mounting tab orientations on the column bracket
Turbo VG30DETT models generate significant underhood heat that accelerates contact wear compared to NA VG30DE variants
Context
The Nissan 300ZX Z32 platform relies on ignition switch 48750-40P05 (superseded to 48750-40P06) mounted to the steering column tube. This electrical switch bolts to the rear of the lock cylinder and provides the critical BAT-ST-IGN-ACC circuit sequencing. When junkyard hunting, target 1990-1996 300ZX units, though 1989-1994 Maxima and 1989-1998 240SX may share the NE038 casting—verify the 4-pin or 6-pin connector configuration against your harness. Common VG30DETT-specific failures include heat-damaged contact springs from turbo proximity and corrosion at the column harness junction. Before purchasing, test continuity across all positions with a multimeter; the switch should show <0.5 ohms resistance in START and RUN positions. Installation requires removing the lower column shroud (three Phillips screws) and releasing the white plastic lock tab while twisting the assembly 90 degrees counterclockwise. Never force the connector—early 1990-1991 models use a fragile brown 4-pin housing that cracks when brittle.

Casting numbers like NE038 are more reliable than stamped OEM numbers due to Nissan's frequent supersession updates
