Quick reference
Left and right sides are not interchangeable due to different mounting geometries and valving calibration
F07 5-Series GT (Gran Turismo) hood struts are approximately 20mm longer and will over-extend F10 hoods - verify body style before installation
Damaged ball studs on the hood or chassis mount will destroy new struts immediately - inspect mounting points for cracks or deformation
Context
The BMW F10 generation 5-Series relies on gas-charged hood lift supports that typically degrade after 60,000-80,000 miles. For the 2011 528i N52, source left side strut 51237185657, with right side being 51237185658. Junkyard hunters should target any 2010-2017 F10 sedan or F11 Touring regardless of engine—struts from a 550i N63 or 535d interchange perfectly with your N52-equipped 528i. Inspect used units for hydraulic oil leakage on the chrome piston rod, which indicates seal failure. Test compression resistance; good struts require significant force to compress manually. Installation requires releasing wire C-clips at both ball socket ends using a small flathead screwdriver—always replace in pairs to prevent hood twist stress. Note that early 2010 production may use 51237176354, which supersedes to the newer number.
